Cancellation of ALL Primary School Cricket Saturday 15th March
Submitted by Helen Lewis, 14/03/2008 2:14:00 AM
Once again, due to the consistant forecast for sustained extreme heat we have made an early decision to cancel ALL primary school cricket scheduled for Saturday March 14th - this includes Divisions A, B, C, Kanga and Have a Go.
I am sure all schools would be doing or have done this anyway.
Unfortunately this means the end of HAVE A GO for this term, as the next weekend is Easter and HAG is NOT scheduled for after Easter. Have a Go will resume this first Saturday back at school in Term 4.
HOWEVER! Divisions A,B,C and KANGA DO continue after Easter, so after a long break with heat and Easter, these divisions will play on Saturday 29th March and 5th April.
WTDCC Hot weather policy - Primary School, Kanga and Have a Go
West Torrens acknowledges that temperature is an issue for young sportspeople and that schools have differing heat policies which should be adhered to. However, should the forecast maximum temperature for any Saturday be 38 degrees or more, (in the Advertiser on Sat am.) then play for that day is automatically cancelled. If a particular schools Heat Policy requires that morning sporting activity be cancelled when the estimated maximum temperature is less than 38 degrees, and the estimated maximum is for that temperature, then that school should notify the opposition by 2.00pm on the preceding Friday and liaise regarding cancellation or special conditions. We ask that Coordinators/Coaches make themselves aware of their school's heat policy and/or discuss with their school the possibility of a Saturday morning sport policy, bearing in mind that in the morning, the temperature is not usually near the forecast maximum. No player should feel pressured to play in any conditions in which he or she feels uncomfortable. Coaches should encourage hydration before, during and after games and monitor players carefully for any signs of heat stress. While we want teams to play as much cricket as possible, we have a responsibility to ensure that games are played in safe and enjoyable conditions for all.
On this occasion I don't think we need wait for the Advertiser Saturday am. forecast.
Keep cool!

SACA Junior Cricket this weekend
Submitted by Helen Lewis, 9/03/2008 5:47:00 AM
We have just been notified by SACA that play in the SACA Junior Grades tomorrow (Under 14 and Under 16) has been abandoned due to the extreme heat.
A decision regarding play on Sunday (or not) will be made by SACA and posted on the SACA website by 8.30am SUNDAY. However SACA acknowledges that play on Sunday is also extremely doubtful given the forecast of 39. However they are giving all teams the maximum opportunity of playing.
Unless we are advised otherwise, under the bylaws, should there be no play in the games this weekend, the top placed teams (ie 1st and 2nd) will go through to the Grand Finals the following week. In our case, the Under 16 Whites and Under 14s would go thru to the Grand Final and the Under 14 Whites would miss out.
We understand that this will be extremely disappointing for the players, coaches, families and indeed all at the club, but we are confident that SACA have given this a great deal of thought and have taken this decision in the best interests of the health and wellbeing of the players and officials.

Hot weather policy - Primary School, Kanga and Have a Go
Submitted by Helen Lewis, 7/03/2008 2:15:00 AM
With the consistently hot weather forecast for the next few days (38 for Friday and Saturday, 39 for Sunday), it is pretty certain the Primary School cricket - Divisions A, B, C, Kanga AND Have a Go will automatically be be cancelled this Saturday March 8th, unless there is a change to the forecast which seems highly unlikely.
On this occasion I don't think we need wait for the Advertiser Saturday am, and confirmation will be posted here tomorrow afternoon.

Ray Sutton Shield a competition for the best primary school players - generally Year 6/7s, sometimes Year 5s. Played on clubs main turf ovals on Sunday afternoons mid October early November. Good performances in this grade are valuable for selection in the State SAPSASA side. We choose a winter training squad which practices at the Adelaide Oval indoor Nets mid July early September, then at Henley Oval. Players in this competition usually play Under 14s (Saturday afternoons) for West Torrens as well, however, some are Under 13 players from Community Clubs.
Young Eagles Generally younger players in Year 4, 5, 6, who have the potential to play Ray Sutton Shield/U14s in the next 1 2 seasons. These players are generally, but not always, already playing U13s, either at West Torrens or a Community Club. This squad is coordinated by Denis Brien who arranges for specialist coaches to work with the players. There are usually a couple of practices at the Adelaide Oval Indoor nets in September, 4 5 practices at Henley Oval before Christmas, and 2 3 practices and a game after Christmas. This is a talent id squad and is a great opportunity for keen, young players.
Under 13s play in the Western Suburbs Junior Cricket Association on Sunday mornings. We have two teams - Blue and Gold, and look on this grade as a development one. It's a step up from Primary School cricket and a great introduction to Club cricket.
Crows Star pads up in Twenty 20
Submitted by Helen Lewis, 13/01/2008 2:15:00 PM
Nathan Bassett has been selected in the Kensington side to take on West Torrens in their Twenty 20 at Henley Oval this Wednesday January 18th at henley Oval. Bassett who is on the comeback trail after breaking an ankle in 2007 last played for Kensington around 5 years ago, and is quite an accomplished batsman.
The Kensington Browns and Western Eagles clashed in a one day game at Henley just last Saturday, with the Browns coming out on top, so no doubt the Eagles boys will be looking to extract some revenge.
The Eagles turned on a powerhouse performance in their last Twenty 20 before Christmas against Sturt, when young gun Corey Knight, who hails from Karoonda had the spectators ducking for cover with a spanking 78 off 29 balls, including 9 fours and 6 sixes in 18 minutes. The Eagles usually bring in the boundary at Henley Oval for the Twenty 20, so there should be some more spectacular action next Wednesday. In form Redbacks opener Matthew Elliott who has been rested from the last two State Twenty 20s, will also no doubt be looking for a good hit out. The action gets underway at Henley Oval at 5.00pm.
Also playing for West Torrens One of two West Torrens Ugandan recruits Patrick Ochan, Patrick made his A Grade debut for the Western Eagles before Christmas. He formerly played Under 19 Test cricket AND Davis Cup tennis for Uganda. Redback Squad member - Peter George Rookie Redback and member of the SA Under 19 Team - James Smith
Also playing for Kensington Redback player - Mark Cleary - 'Ice' Rookie Redback Jake Brown (Kengsington Skipper) State Under 19 Captain - Patrick Connolly
